PartyNextDoor on Writing Rihanna’s “Work”

By  |

Little is still known about Jahron Braithwaite, better known as PartyNextDoor, other than his affiliation to Drake and OVO. While he maintains an inconspicuous public persona, his ability to create chart topping music was on full display when he wrote “Work” for Rihanna, arguably the best (and longest charting track) on her double platinum selling album Anti (which you can download for free in the link at the bottom). If you thought this was a stroke of luck, Party has been writing music for some of our favorite artists for years. Signing a publishing deal with Warner/Chapel by the young age of 18, he’s written songs for the likes of Drake, Rihanna, Usher, Big Sean and Justin Bieber to name a few. In a very rare interview with Power 98 FM raidoParty opens up about what it’s like working with Rihanna and more specifically how he came to write “Work.” He goes on to say:

“She let me into her house in Malibu and I kind of interviewed her. She told me a few stories and I just started writing songs. I wish I could say more but that’s literally how it went down. People think that’s a party song. It’s a breakup song. It’s blues. It went from braggadocious to blues.”

A reference track for the singer surfaced online for good measure, with a few different bars from Drake too:

Here’s the original:

“Work” spent 9 weeks in the No. 1 spot of the Billboard Hot 100. The Drake-assisted track remains Party’s longest charting song to date but many people didn’t know “Work” was almost left off her album. Party recounts:

“Her label didn’t care for Caribbean music at the time, but she fought for it. She said it was her family’s favorite song.”

Rihanna was so happy with Party’s contribution she even gifted him with some vintage Playboy magazines:

Party is currently wrapping up his “Summer’s Over” tour with Jeremih and enjoying the release of his P3 album. To check out the remaining dates of his tour click here.
