Record Store Day is right around the corner on Saturday, April 16th and is celebrated across the nation, with many new albums being pressed for this date specifically.

The tradition was created in 2007, but it was not made mainstream until it was backed by the full lineup of Metallica in 2008. Since then, there has been an “ambassador” for each years Record Shop Day. Last year, Dave Grohl wrote an open letter and shot a video describing the importance of discovering music in independent record stores and how it changed his life. He credits the Edward Winter Group‘s song “Frankenstein” for inspiring him to be the musician he is today. This year, Metallica will be the ambassador for the second time.

Here are some of the coolest albums being released this year.

1. The Hills Remixes – The Weeknd

The band behind the “I Can’t Feel My Face” fame are releasing a special 12-inch release. The album will contain remixes done by superstars Eminem and Nicki Minaj. An incredible mix of RnB and two of the greatest rappers of our time, Eminem and Minaj, each take a track and contribute their own verses.

2. All Aboard the Blue Train – Johnny Cash

Originally released in 1962, this album contained Johnny Cash’s first rendition of “Folsom Prison Blues,” one of the legend’s biggest hits. While Cash’s songs are always being repressed and released, this will be a new pressing of a classic album. More Cash is always better. Also, look out for a best of release of Cash’s material with the release of his album Best of the Johnny Cash Show.

3. Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks

Weren’t expecting that, were you? This is a pressing of a classic episode from the television show Doctor Who. It has widely been praised as the greatest storyline in the series. Find the album as a homage to old radio drama broadcasts. It might not be what you’re looking for, but the novelty is cool.

4. Melancholy Mood – Bob Dylan

Another folk legend plans on releasing a few songs this Record Store Day. These are not re-released songs, though. This album will include four songs from his upcoming album Fallen Angels. These four songs were printed to be released in Japan as part of Dylan’s tour. Only 7,000 albums remain and will be sent to record stores across America.

5. Multiple Releases – The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips are really going all out for Record Store Day this year. The band plans on having three releases for the special day. A 12-inch release called Lightning Strikes the Postman, which is a new mix of their 1995 album The Clouds Taste Metallic, as well as a box set containing 8 LPs of all their releases since 2006.

6. Tha Carter and Tha Carter II – Lil Wayne

The rap artist Lil Wayne is contributing to the celebration with the release of two of his more popular albums. I’m very glad that Lil Wayne is doing this, as modern rap is not featured enough in new vinyl. While neither of these albums are Wayne’s biggest, they still contain some strong material and some of his defining work.

7. Live at the Aquarius: The First Performance – The Doors

This is a release that I am very excited for. The Doors are a legendary band. This three LP set is the recording of their very first show. This is an album that I will be looking to add to my own collection.

8. Double-Sided – Twenty One Pilots

An album containing unreleased live tracks from Fox Theater. This is part of a series of modern musicians who are releasing albums for a similar holiday in France called “Disquaire Day.” Twenty One Pilots is a band that is known for supporting Record Shop Day.

9. Like a Virgin & Other Hits Madonna

A release of Madonna in her prime, this album will contain many of Madonna’s hits from her long career. This was a release that was pressed for Japan, but not all were sold. Get the best of Madonna, but move quick because there are only 4500.

10. (Alternative) Tusk – Fleetwood Mac

The classic rock gods of Fleetwood Mac are releasing a new alternative version of their 1979 release of Tusk. Fleetwood Mac albums are always a great addition to your record collection.
