2015 was a memorable year for Conrad Sewell. The Australian native broke out onto the music scene with his vocals on the mega-hit “Firestone,” produced by Kygo. His debut EP, All I Know, featured the platinum hit “Start Again” and he toured with the likes of Maroon 5 and Ed Sheeran.  To top it off, Sewell took home an Australian Recording Industry Association Music Award (ARIA) for Song of the Year. Trebel got the chance to talk with Conrad to recap his big year and get his perspective on all of this success and what is to come.

Trebel Music: Can you pick out a specific moment from this past year when it hit you that you had your big break?

Conrad Sewell: Winning the ARIA was a big milestone and I think the Ed Sheeran support really helped boost my profile so you could say that was a big break.

I will always remember last night // my first ARIA thank you Australia

TM: After releasing your EP “All I Know” and during its initial success, how did it feel knowing that is was not only well-known in your home country, but in America and the rest of the world as well?

CS: It feels great. The reaction to the EP has been amazing and it just makes me so happy. I’ve worked long and hard to put something I’m proud of out there. Now I just can’t wait for the album to be released.

TM: The EP crosses genres. It’s got soul, a little bit of pop, and even some R&B elements. How would you explain your sound to someone who is not familiar with your work?

CS: It’s hard to put my sound in a box, and truthfully, I don’t try to. I’m happy to just let it be what it is. But if I had to categorize it, I would call it ‘pop soul’ or soulful pop.

Sewell has recently partnered up with Avicii and Coca-Cola, to produce a song for their new campaign “Taste the Feeling”. Conrad Sewell is the voice of the new song, and it is his first big project with a major brand. It was also his first time collaborating with Avicii.

TM: What was that experience like making a song for such a recognizable and beloved brand? How did you feel when you were approached about the project?

CS: I was so excited to work with Coke and Avicii on this song. To be involved with such an iconic brand like Coke is amazing and Avicii was such a lad and so easy to work with.

TM: At the end of 2015, you took home the ARIA Music Award for fan-voted Song of the Year. Is it a special feeling when you get that recognition from your home country?

CS: It’s an indescribable feeling getting my first break in Australia. Australia is my home and I love the country and the people. I grew up watching the ARIAs so to now to have one in my living room is a trip.

TM: How has your experience touring in the states been so far? You had a snowy start!

CS: Tour has been great my live show is everything to me. It was a snowy start to the tour but things have cleared up and we couldn’t be happier.

TM: Finally in 2016, you’re working on your full-length album. What can we expect from it?

CS: I want to make a classic album, something that people will hopefully go back and listen to in 10 years and still enjoy it. To do that, I think the production and the songwriting needs to be timeless. So that’s my mission.

Conrad is finishing up his tour with Jess Glynne until mid-February. His album is set to come out some time in 2016. Until then, we will be keeping his EP on repeat! For all the latest on Conrad Sewell follow his twitter @ConradOfficial
