5 Highly Anticipated Albums of 2017
A new year is slowly creeping up on us, and that can only mean one thing: time to start obsessing about the new music that is right around the corner. Due to the oft-times volatile nature of the music business, it’s difficult to anticipate just when an album might be dropping this far in advance (as we all know, some of the biggest records of the past few years have dropped with barely any warning or notice at all!), but all signs are pointing to 2017 as a year that some great music will be released to the public. Let’s take a look at some of the most highly anticipated albums on deck:
1) Run the Jewels
Hip hop supergroup Run the Jewels have set the world on fire with their previous two albums (appropriately titled Run the Jewels and RTJ2), and its members Killer Mike and El-P have indicated that RTJ3 is nearly done and is being polished at this point to prep for a release some time next year. No firm release date, though we do know that it will be available for free download and will likely coincide with a world tour that launches in early January. So come to think of it…maybe this album will drop before year’s end?
Though the latest from the animated band/brainchild of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett was originally slated to drop in 2016, it has since been announced that the record will come out sometime in 2017. Not much is known about the sound and direction of the album, but Albarn has hinted that it will – as per usual – feature a slew of collaborations and that the songs are all very up-tempo and fun.
3) Jay Z
It’s hard to believe that it’s been more than three years since Jay Z dropped his last album Magna Carta Holy Grail, but that’s probably because he hasn’t exactly been keeping out of the limelight during that time, either. Between the controversial publicity behind his ownership of music streaming service TIDAL, his (maybe) influence on his wife Beyonce’s scorned lover album Lemonade, and his appearance/performance with would-be leaders of the free world, we all feel like we know what Jay’s been up to. But rumors have been circulating around the Internet that the rap icon has either completed a new record or is pretty damn close. Whispers of a subsequent world tour and possible collaboration with Beyonce on some of the album (if not the whole thing) have also been persistent. Though there are no firm details to share at this point, one thing is for sure – when the word is official, we will all know about it.
4) Queens of the Stone Age
Band leader Josh Homme and guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen have both recently confirmed that the group will be hitting the recording studio before the end of this year, and that they intend to go about making their follow up to 2013’s …Like Clockwork a bit simpler than the process was last time.
5) System of a Down
It’s been over a decade since the metal group System of a Down hit fans with new material, but its members have recently acknowledged that they are working on a new record, with an alleged 15 potential songs in the can ready to record according to drummer John Dolmayan. The band will be hitting a slew of European festivals next summer, so perhaps their sixth album will be available around then?
